Chief Medical Officer, Inova Alexandria Hospital

Inova is seeking a dynamic, collaborative physician executive to serve as Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for Inova Alexandria Hospital (IAH). This senior leader will provide clinical and administrative leadership to advance quality, safety, physician engagement, and operational excellence across the hospital.

In addition to serving as Chief Medical Officer for Inova Alexandria Hospital, a longstanding community hospital recognized for excellence, this leader will play a key executive role in overseeing the clinical strategy and physician leadership framework for the two new hospitals that will replace the current campus and expand access across Inova’s Eastern Region. These include the new Inova Alexandria Campus, a 192-bed hospital with fully private rooms and expanded advanced cardiac, neurosciences, women’s health, cancer, and outpatient specialty services, and the new Inova Franconia-Springfield Campus, a 110-bed hospital that will build on the existing HealthPlex and provide advanced emergency care, surgical services, specialized inpatient care, and orthopedic-focused outpatient services.

The CMO will help ensure alignment of medical staff leadership, clinical quality standards, patient safety practices, and regulatory readiness across the current hospital and both future campuses. The Chief Medical Officer at IAH ensures that adequate Quality Monitoring and Improvement Programs are maintained to assist the Quality Council in evaluating the quality and appropriateness of patient care provided by the hospital’s physicians.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provides executive clinical leadership in support of two new hospital development initiatives, including medical staff planning, quality and safety framework development, regulatory preparedness, and alignment with Inova standards of care.
• Assists the Quality Council in developing quality standards that support continuous improvement in the quality of medical care.
• Monitors medical safety education and supports a culture of continuous learning.
• Monitors patient care delivery standards established by the medical staff and assists department chairs in addressing issues.
• Collaborates with Nursing and other clinical departments to promote patient safety and respond to physician concerns regarding quality issues.
• Oversees the hospital’s utilization management processes, systems, and standards, and partners with the Outcomes Driven Care Committee.
• Assists with developing processes and procedures aimed at appropriately reducing length of stay.
• Works with Department Chairs and Committee Chairs to oversee the safety of hospital care.
• Partners with the elected medical staff structure to optimize the quality of peer review at IAH and ensure regulatory compliance, including state and federal requirements and accreditation standards.
• Serves as a physician spokesperson for the hospital, as needed, in collaboration with the President of the Medical Staff. May assist the President of the Medical Staff in arbitrating conflicts and grievances among physicians and ensuring medical staff compliance with bylaws, rules, and regulations.
• Assists in medical staff recruitment and supervises the House Medicine service at IAH.
• Provides medical input and recommendations to leadership regarding equipment needs, programs, space, capital investment, and other strategic priorities.
• Supports clinical program development in collaboration with the medical staff.
• Assists with integrating medical staff leadership into operational policy-making and planning, including annual business objectives, capital planning, and clinical program development.

Minimum Requirements:

• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited university
• Licensed (or capable of being licensed) in the State of Virginia. Board Certified in an approved AMA specialty Upon
• 10 years of experience in clinical practice of medicine in a hospital setting including experience as an officer in Medical Staff governance
• 5 years of experience in a medical staff leadership role

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Medical Management, Public Health, or a related field
• Experience leading hospital quality, patient safety, peer review, and performance improvement programs
• Demonstrated success in medical staff engagement, physician alignment, and partnership with elected medical staff leadership
• Experience supporting new hospital planning, hospital expansion, facility activation, or clinical integration effortstor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited university
